How to become a Electro Technical Officer or ETO in Merchant Navy?
If you want to work on a Merchant Navy vessel as a Electrical Engineer, you need to do a Electro Technical Officer or ETO course.
The Electro Technical Officer or ETO of a ship is responsible for the safe operation and maintenance of the electrical and electronic components available onboard.
Course Duration and Eligibility Criteria :
The Electro Technical Officer or ETO course’s duration is 4 months or 17 weeks.
The age criteria varies from institute to institute. Candidate should not age more than 28 years (some institutes allow up to 35 years also) at the time of commencement of course.
Candidate should have scored at least 50% marks in English as a separate subject, at either 10th or 12th standard.
Candidates who have completed B.E. / B. Tech in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Electronics and Telecommunication / Communication Engineering or Electronics and Instrumentation Engineering with a minimum of 60 % and have scored a minimum 60 % marks in (10 +2) with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics as their main subjects can apply for this course.
Candidates who did Diploma and got the lateral entry to 2nd year of B.Tech, must have scored a minimum of 60 % in Diploma followed by the Degree eligibility criteria.​
Candidate should be medically fit. The medical will be carried out at the time of admission by a DG Shipping approved doctor.

Course Fees :
The ETO course fees varies from college to college.
The total course fees will be around 2,00,000 – 3,00,000 rupees.

Career Path :
After completing the ETO course, the candidate will join a ship as a Electrical Cadet.
The Electrical Cadet has to complete 12 months sailing time to become eligible for the ETO COC exam.
After passing the ETO COC exam, the Electrical Cadet can then be promoted to Electro Technical Officer or ETO on a Merchant Navy vessel. Please note that the promotion criteria may vary from company to company.
